One of my raid 1 disks has failed so I thought I would update the disks from 500gig to 2TB.

My question is if I replace the failed 500gig disk with the 2 TB disk, will I be able to replace the second disk 500gig disk once the sync is done between the two, and still gain the full capacity of 2 TB in RAID1 with the data intact without using a disk partitioning tool?

I know the spec for RAID 1 says that with two different sized disks you will only have the capacity of the smaller disk but the smaller disk is going to be replaced to that of the larger disk.

Theoretically when you replace the 2nd drive & it has synced up, you should then be able to extend the partition to the full amount.

Thank Justin - that is what I was hoping. So I will try that but will make a backup on a spare drive first.

Yep, second confirmation that it works fine, assuming you're using Intel MB RAID?? If so, ensure you use the latest Rapid Storage Technology driver/software version.

Rebuild 500-2TB, rebuild old 2TB-new2TB. Then extend array size.

Cheers

No, not using Intel MB RAID - it is a Netgear Duo NAS, sorry overlooked mentioning that - but further research I have done indicates that providing I am usiin X-RAID, which I am, then I can resize the partition.
