My old ga-ma78gm-s2h seems to have given up the ghost. I'm looking for a new mobo/CPU to replace it. Nothing too special, simply enough to run a Nova-T 500 and to use the HTPC also as a file server. Perhaps the ability to play Blu-ray might be nice, but not essential.

Also, I'm hoping there's a cheap option with on-board HDMI out, to simplify the build somewhat.

Are there any solid combos that are proven amongst users here?

Its pretty hard to pin point the "perfect" build as each person has different environments and needs.

I have taken the plunge and upgraded and few of my parts with the following

- CPU: AMD A8-3870K Quad Core
- Motherboard: ASUS F1A75-M-PRO
- RAM: Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
- CPU Cooler: Scythe Big Shuriken 2 CPU Cooler

Its all built fine and fires up which is a good start. Real test is hooking it up to my Bravia via hdmi and see how sleep and wake goes.

Its all trial and error with these things mate. Good luck.

My main HTPC/fileserver is an oldish Intel Core2Quad Q8200 & I've relatively recently switched to an AMD video card. If I was replacing it now, Richie's config is pretty much exactly what I'd go for (except more RAM as I use a RAM drive from timeshift on ForTheRecord TV server). The old Q8200 is a 95watt one & it's near silent with a stock fan set to the lowest setting, so the 100w A8-3870 is a minor concern, but a good cooler should fix that.

I was having issues with the ASUS F1A75-M-PRO. Random reboots and not posting. In the middle of an RMA. If I can't get a replacement, can anyone recommend a board to go with the A8-3870?

Wouldn't mind going back to Gigabyte.

Cheers

I've recently built an AMD A8-3870K system using the Gigabyte GA-A75-D3H mobo, had to update the BIOS to F4 to properly support the A8-3870K .

Apart from a non-related Corsair CMT8GX3M2A1866C9 8GB (2x4GB) Dominator GT DDR3 issue ( defective DDR3 module on write cycles ), the system has been very stable.

Cheers for that. The RMA doesn't look good as they claimed I scratched the bottom of the board during the installation.

Not happy!
