I'm rebuilding (after a lightning strike took out the whole house a month ago... have given up on GIO assessors pulling their fingers out... don't ask...).

The subject line "... choices for 2012" refers to the fact that a lot of posts here on the (below) card choices were posted more than a year ago).

I had a Mythbuntu Frontend + Backend setup that was working fine for me. In building a new backend I'm wondering about digital tuner cards.

Looking through the threads here I see the Hauppauge tuners are popular, notably the HVR2200. But this is a hybrid, right? So one digital + one analogue tuner?

My preference of course is for a dual digital card. What do you recommend (least amount of setup problems) out of these: Hauppauge Nova-T, HVR2200, HVR2210.

The 2200/2210 are dual hybrids - each of the 2 tuners is a hybrid. Most are used as plain dual DVB-T.

The DigitalNow Quad can be used in Linux with a bit of work. The DN 7164 is essentially the same as the HVR2200, but cheaper.

Hi,

My opinion will differ to Arkays on the HVR-2200. The newer versions maybe easier to setup (less tweaking channel settings)
I would just use 2 x Sony Play TV. They are a little box connected to PC by USB, with dual tuners (same as nova T pretty much)
Then just add them to mythtv.

The other advantage I see these days with slim cases, the heat is kept down even more, by having external tuners. As long as you can hide them.

Price: $60-70 on eBay

I still stand by the HD Homerun dual network tuners. They are extremely stable, you can hide them where ever you have a network port and aerial outlet and they work perfectly with Myth, eyetv, WMC, you name it. No tweaking, no stuffing around.

Hi,

I'm actually wanting to buy one of these myself to test with mythtv.
Keep looking on eBay, but sill a bit expensive.

I jagged a 2nd one on ebay the other week for around $80. Just have to wait, they don't come up often. JB will bargain down to around $145 per unit.

Thanks for all the replies. Still waiting for the insurer to pull their finger out.

In the meantime, I'm planning my replacements.

This one, right? Kaiser Baas KBA01018 Network TV Tuner

So it's dead easy to get working with MythTV/buntu?

And with one of these, I just connect the aerial and then plug it into the (gigabit) LAN? So how does Myth control, change channels for recording?

And I take it that if I had just one of these, I could record two different stations or two pair of stations in the case of, say 70,72 and 90,99, all together right?

Hi,

I've never set one up, but heard they are very easy. There is a config in the mythbuntu menu for them.
You could record more than 2 on each when you first set Mythtv up. On DVB tuners you can.

OK, I see these are almost half the price. Same deal for connectivity? Aerial and Network cable? As for the connectivity to Myth, how does Myth control it and change channels for recording.

Edit: USB connection by the looks of it. And dual tuner.

Hi,

Dual tuner and just USB like you say.
Benefit of the homerun is they can be remotely located.

Thanks mate.

As far as control is concerned on either of these... how does Myth control changing TV stations when a recording is set?

On the play tv its no different to a pci tuner other than the bus type usb/pci It just does and we need not concern ourselves how. I guess the mythtv program says hey tuner go on this channel and heres all the info on where to go... and it does. On the homerun the signal to change channel is sent via the ethernet cable I think.

Yep that one, Kaiser Baas is the local distributor. It is directly integrated into mythbuntu. Connects as you say (aerial and network - it has a 100mbit port).

It supports more then one channel from the same mux, per tuner.

old reviews http://www.mythtv.co.nz/mythtv/. Chatter on it http://forums.whirlp...rchive/1082996. Multirec info http://www.mythtv.or..._one_multiplex. Current trunk supports multirec with hdhr http://code.mythtv.o...ac/ticket/6138# (see bottom post).

Thanks for the replies guys. Very good info.

Now the problem is... which one. Hiding the thing isn't going to be a problem. Just which one to buy.
