Ive just replaced my 2007-built Intel Core 2 Duo-based HTPC with an Intel i5-2500k including a fan-less Seasonic PSU and an Intel 520 series 240GB SSD. I use the CPU graphics (Intel 3000) so there is no video card in my box. The only moving part is the stock CPU fan which generates the 40dB...well unless thats a measure of the ambient sound in my house. Im using the wife's iphone 4 and some app called Decibel. What the true dB figure is doesnt really matter, its all relative to this device.
Now, despite prevailing wisdom, I am going to dare to use only the SSD on this HTPC which means there will be a lot of writing by the live TV buffer. I use a quad tuner Digitalnow tuner and me n the Mrs record a fair amount of TV. I intend to monitor the Intel SSD Toolbox closely for wear/degradation on a weekly basis, if I notice stuff goes south quickly ill throw in a platter HDD.
