hi there,
I have a new media center with the 64 bit version of windows 7.

I have a problem with not being able to play .mkv files.

can anyone please recommend a method of fixing this ??

Thanks in advance

You need a 64 bit splitter. Haali or LAV. You then need to open an MKV in WMP to tag it as a video format.

The Shark007 codec package (shark007.net) includes the codecs you need, but don't forget you'll need the basic 32 package, plus the x64 components part, so two downloads. I find turning off mkv thumbnailing in the shark007 control panel overcomes the occasional issue as well.

+1 for Shark007

What "occasional issue" does turning off thumbnailing overcome?

I would sometimes have a MKV file that crashed my Media Centre just by browsing to the folder that contained it! Disabling the MKV thumbnails fixed the issue.

P.S Total random note, but any English scholars out there care to comment? I would have typed "an MKV file" as it rolls off the tongue a lot better, but I suspect "a MKV file" is more correct???

Definately "a". The trick is "a" and "an" were not designed for modern "words" that we make out of acronyms and abreviations. The fact that we pronounce "MKV" as emm kay vee makes it sound like "an" is required. Ironically if you used that made up phonetics you would use "an".

Interestingly abbreviations and acronyms get different pronounciations around the globe. I love wi-fi, here its why fye, in Spain its wiff fee. Made me laugh each time I heard it.

Anyway .... back on thread :o
