You may have noticed in recent days I've had to close the forum a few times, this has been necessary to work on a persistent database problem.

Earlier this morning my logs showed the same error, even though the forum/site appeared unaffected. It's a slightly worrying issue which points to corruption in one of the main database tables as follows:

Mysqli statement execute error : Incorrect key file for table '/tmp/#sql_5394_0.MYI'; try to repair it

I've been progressively trying different repair options, the latest being using "myisamchk" which is a fairly aggressive method requiring the mysql server to be shut down whilst it runs.

Unfortunately when I attempted this option a couple of hours ago it trashed the database!

The good news is that of course I had done a backup immediately prior to attempting the repair - the bad news is that particular backup wouldn't restore. DOH!

Anyhow I managed to restore one from the system which was 24 hours old, which means that posts made during that time have disappeared - sorry about that.

Anyhow the next step requires a lot more work, I'll have to duplicate the entire site so I can work on it without risking bringing this place down again. I know I should have done that anyhow, but according to everything I've read about "myisamchk", it damages less than 1% of databases - and mine was (of course) one of them.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused to members who have lost their threads/posts. :sorry:

Mike,

Just like waking up with Alzheimer’s, every day is a new day and who cares what you did yesterady :D

Sorry to hear about the loss and problems. As always, apprecaite the effort required to keep things running here. Sadly I know nothing about Mysqli so have nothing to offer with respect to the error.

Thanks for the kind words Duncan :)

It's surprising how little I knew about MySQL as well a few years ago - and even now 90% of it goes over my head - but I guess after going on 8 years keeping this place afloat, even the penguin and its close relation PHP don't scare me half as much as they did - most of the time that is! ;)

just wait until you have an exchange server suffer a dirty shutdown.. or a transaction log missing... not fun when you have an employee tapping on your should every 5 min "is it fixed yet?"

but cudo's for the backup.. atleast you had that. :)
