Hi
My windows 7 media player TV side of things has stopped working on my HP 610-1200a touchsmart all in one PC. The other components, DVD, movie and TV guide are all Ok but when I select live TV I get the following error:

“Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly – restart media centre or windows.”

Of course that did not solve issues, so I reinstalled the drivers for the TV card, stoped and restarted the windows components, nothing seems to get the TV side of things working again It has been working. Had TV about 3 weeks ago but have not tried it for a while. Cable to antenna is working as I have a Visit PC and media centre works fine on that. I assume that the either an update from HP has overwritten some drivers or a configuration has gone west some were along the line. I initially suspected the TV card but as Guide is working and I can set up the channels I would assume that the card is ok. Have been on web and lots of discussion about but no real solution so I thought I would try this forum to see if anyone has had a similar problem or knows of a fix OTHER than reinstalling windows which would be a nightmare.

Try system restore and restore to the earliest date possible.

The error message you have usually refers to video card drivers, not tuner drivers.

It is very possible that an update has overwritten a driver, so a system restore could help your there.

Thanks for the info, but have already tried that. Went all the way back to day one when I knew the system was working but I still get the same message. Oh well, worth a try. I guess I will have to either put up with no media centre or do a clean install of windows.

There are a couple of things you can try if you want. Make sure your antivirus is not the problem. Some can cause an issue here.

This message can refer to the codecs needed in Win 7 to play live TV, they may be corrupted. You can install an aftermarket codec pack like the one from Shark 007.

If this pack is not to your liking once you have installed it, you can then uninstall it, the uninstall process should then restore the original Win 7 codecs, hopefully in an uncorrupted state.

Thanks again for the help, I do appreciate it. But alas no luck I am afraid. Installed the codex as you suggested but that did not fix, then uninstalled and that did not fix. Getting very disappointed in Windows 7. My old XP and vista pc's have never let me down and are still running strong. This new HP touch smart though, while it appears to be very nice I am not so sure. Internet explorer now has stopped working tonight and crashes every time I try and open it. If I didn't have Trent Titanium running I would assume a virus attack, but I think it is just Windows 7 going through death pains and corrupting random files as it dose so. So I have been busy for the last 18hrs backing every thing up. I intend to do a windows clean install tomorrow to try and fix the problems once and for all and verify if it is software or hardware related. I will let you know how I get on. I think I am going to be busy as I do have a lot of software installed, pics etc and it is going to take a lot of time to re install them.

sounds like something has gone haywire on your system (if it's a virus - careful not to reinstate it on your new install). windows 7 is still a really good option (particularly on that type of h/w).

would agree that if you can play other video and dvd files OK (via Media Center Video / Movies Library) - and it's just happening on live tv - it sounds like the mpeg2/4 decoders for live digital tv are failing (or have crashed). If on other hand it's all type of video playback within Media Center UI - then that means it's a video card driver issue (tell tale sign is that the animations are disabled on the media center menus)

not sure if it's got a tv tuner built in - or it's a third party one - but if you're using it in Media Center - don't install any 3rd party tv/pvr tools that come with the tuner card (just install the raw drivers only) - as this can mess things up somewhat with codecs too (as you are using Media Center you don't need it anyhow).

I had exactly the same problem and error message a couple of weeks ago. Still don't know what caused it. I'm using Windows Home Server 2011 so was able to roll back to an earlier state of the OS. Sorry my experience doesn't offer you an easier solution...

Thanks once again. The system I have, HP 610-1200a has a built in everything so I guess if it is not hardware related then it must be software. Everything other than live TV is working. So I have had a busy time backing things up ready for re install. Hopefully that fixes things but it will mean a lot of work. Just hopfully it dosnt happen again.
