I've been playing around with getting plugins working with XBMC so that I can stream some internet videos through XBMC using just the remote.

Turned out to be very easy, so I thought I'll just post up the steps.

First, you'll need to download the SVN Repo Installer plugin from the XBMC site here.

Save the zip file (SVN_Repc_Installer.zip) to your ~/.xbmc/plugins/video folder and unzip it. It should create a folder with the unzipped contents. You should have the following folder structure:

~/.xbmc/plugins/video/SVN Repo Installer/

That's it for the installer installation.

Now start up XBMC.

Select

Videos

and you should now see "Video plugins" on the menu along with Moves, TV shows, etc.

Select:

Video plugins > SVN Repo Installer > xbmc-addons > plugins
You will see xbmc load five items which are: music, pictures, programs, video and weather.

Once loaded select

video
XBMC will then load around 71 items (it takes a while) which are all the video plugins you can select from to install. To install a plugin, just select it. XBMC will indicate whether it is compatible or not. If compatible, select Install. Even after it installs, not all plugins will work. I presume you would need a US proxy for some of them. Once installed, the plugin will be listed under:

Video > Video plugins

If you try to install a plugin, post up the results so others will know the outcome. So far I have successfully installed (you may have to wait a while as it loads the buffer):

  • TED Talks (looks interesting)
  • National Geographic
  • ESPN Video (mixed success)
  • TMZ
No luck with (installed but did not play or playlist was empty)

  • Yahoo Music Videos
  • FreeMoovies
  • TV Shack
  • The Simpsons
  • CNN Video
  • Easynews
  • Google Video
  • PBS Video

Incompatible:

  • YouTube

To delete a plugin, just right click it and select delete. I also noted that you can right click on a plugin and select plugin settings. This allows you to set a password - may be useful if you install some of the R rated plugins (assuming they work).

I haven't tried installing any plugins for music, pictures, programs, or weather. To do so, I presume you would need to save the SVN Repo Installer into the respective folder under ~/.xbmc/plugins/

With the new release of xbmc ("Dharma"), this post is now obsolete.

Duffy,

I'm having some issues getting the add-ons to work. I navigate through the menus ie system>add-ons>all add-ons, when i go to select one it comes up with downloading..0%, thens nothing.

A bit of google'n brought up CHMOD755 (ie permissions) but i'm not too sure. Still getting used to Linux!
