AVI video files used to play in my xbox360 media extender - no problem, also transcoding was NOT required.

What happened, it seemed that access to the video files in media center (on the xbox) completely dissapeared. It was as if there were no video files there at all, my folder structure remained, but there are videos in any of them. I downloaded and installed the latest divx because i heard that it allows you to be able to stream mkv files directly to the xbox media center, no transcoding required. And yes it worked, very well. I can see and play all the mkv files in my library, however i still can't see any avi's.

I should also add that avi's can be played with no problem from the xbox dashboard, but that's not where i want them, i want them in media center. I have mediabrowser installed and working on my xbox extender, and all my video files (avi and mkv) can be transcoded. Again, thats not what i want - transcoding is slow and provides problems when you want to seek through a video file.

I have the following installed on my pc (running windows 7 ultimate) shark007's win7 codec pack, and the latest divx.

Is anyone else experiencing something similar to this, or does anyone have know of a solution to this problem. Please let me know

Doubt it, did you check to see what the PerceivedType and Content type was for .avi in the registry (under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT)?

Most of the time these things don't show up is because these have changed for some reason. For an avi the PerceivedType should be video and the Content Type video/avi

Solved my problem.

I formatted and reinstalled windows. Installed the latest Shark007 codecs and x64 components. This time i didn't install Divx at all. Everything is working beautifully, Mkv's and avi's.

I tried the DivX preview with the MKV support, and that stuffed up my playback.
I rolled back the system and everything was fine.

Windows 7 + Astro's Black theme + Sharkie's codecs = Happy media centre.

Stupid question, but how on earth did you get .mkv files to work?? I mean, you stated you installed the latest divx drivers. Was that all? Or did you have to change registry parameters etc? I am intrigued, as I have been remuxing mine to m2ts files

Installing the Divx "Foundation Codecs" automagically makes mkv's work in the MC interface on Extenders when you're running W7..
