well it seems to be the same playing them off memory stick so ive changed all my series to record on the sd channels...another problem im having is that there is a stutter every 15-20 seconds or so with dvr-ms playback?

Is the stuttering present only when you play on the network, or when you play off USB stick as well? And is it present when you play back on the computer?

Hmm, then I don't know why that's happening. Stutter is one problem I haven't experienced.

And yeah, it seems to have no issue with anything other than Microsoft recorded tv files.

Regarding the AC3 in dvr-ms issue, I haven't had a chance to look around the internet, but I have a sneaking suspicion it has to do with the AC3 PMT format used in DVB broadcasts, which is different from the AC3 PMT format used in ATSC broadcasts (basically the AC3 audio in OUR digital broadcasts is flagged differently from that in American digital broadcasts, which might explain why the WDTV isn't recognising it, and why they may not have noticed it during testing, cos it works in america).

I could be wrong, but I intend to test my theory out after my exams are done in a couple of weeks.

Then you can go back to recording in HD ;) .... (maybe)

Are you sure you're driving the TV at the right refresh rate?

For playback of recorded tv, you should set it to 50Hz, and see if that helps.

Well, I don't use RCA, I use HDMI, so I don't know for sure, but it should be ok the video settings of the wdtv.

I see this post hasn't been updated for sometime.

So is it worth considering one of these to replace my aging lounge pc that simply plays files from the NAS? I record on windows 7 directly to the NAS and then watch via the lounge computer. Just replaced the main machine, so thought I might investigate replacing the lounge machine. I am about as interested in an x box as a worm is in the speed of light.

My father in law is using one to play recordings from his ForTheRecord TV server. That records in plain TS format (same as MediaPortal & most hardware PVRs). It's perfect for him as he doesn't need live or timeshifted viewing.

The issue you'll probably still have is it playing WTV or DVR-MS consistently.
