It really is that good.

TVHeadend is confusing at first because the XBMC doco is minimal but a quick flick through the man pages on the TVHeadend website will sort you out.

XBMC has moved strides ahead both in the handling of libraries of media and in skin design. It truly is an elegant beasty these days. The true beauty of the skins is not really revealed until you set up libraries of media and get to see the wonderful work done on making truly engaging browsing environments. Plot synopses, run downs of cast members, posters and so very much more.

I installed the Live version and had everything configured and running in under half an hour. Except for the libraries, they're still scanning my great hoard of crap.

Recording of live tv and epg based season recordings are all a part of the package. All epg based transactions occur in the web interface only. But there is support for an amazing range of mixed card formats.

The xbmc TV watching part is something else again. It works on navigable tag based groups of channels (I'm explaining this poorly but it is quite odd) and channel change is speed is amazing. Simply amazing. It shows the slow channel changes in MCE really are software based.

Its not perfect, far from it. It is however a substantial step forward and a remarkable achievement. And, more important than that, its good fun to play with.

Hey eepunk,

interested to try this - does the 9.11 live build contain the packages for the tvheadend backend? or frontend only? ie - can i do a "combined backend/frontend" setup using just the live build? or have you got tvheadend running on a seperate server box ?

The TVHeadend package and apt repo are included in the LIVE distro but it is a trivial matter to add them to an existing 9.10 install.

I run the backend locally, it is a back-end only. XBMC is the front-end, displaying the video streamed by TVHeadend over its htsp protocol.

If you're interested in trying it, this how to is quite good.
