This is what info comes up when it crashes:

Error Signature: EventType : MCX P1 : sh.5.1.2700.2230 P2 : PhotoGalleryPage
P3 : Security P4 : RegistryKey_OpenSubKey P5 : 473 P6 : OpenSubKey
P7 : GetPerceivedType

And this is the "Technical Data" that would be sent to Microsoft...

C:\Documents and Settings\Rabbit\Local Settings\Application Data\microsoft\ehome\ehshell.crash
C:\WINDOWS\medctroc.log
C:\Documents and Settings\Rabbit\Local Settings\Application Data\microsoft\ehome\BlackScreen.log

Have either of you guys installed any MCE plugins or new Windows programs recently?

If so, so might try doing a Windows system restore to an earlier date.

I have an idea as to whats happening but I'd like to ask a question first. How many of you guys did a Windows Update recently and said okay to the Authentication?

Not sure if this helps, but I said yes to the Authentication when asked the other day (unfortunately, you gotta to get any now, unless you hack it) and my "My Videos" appears to be working fine. The difference in that however, is that I don't actually have any videos in the folder... Just thought it might help.

Schlep.

Hmmm... Not sure...
I guess. I have the PC set for automatic updates...

How can I go back a few?

Okay Try this, using Windows explorer navigate to the folder where My Videos lives and show the files as thumbnails and see if it crashes there too. Try single left clicking on a video file too and see if it crashes. explorer.

Thanks for that. I gave that a go and everything worked fine...
(Windows Explorer didn't crash)

I then uninstalled all the Windows XP Updates back to when it was working fine - and now "My Pictures" works, but "My Videos" still crashes as soon as you click on it.

When you hover over "My Videos" on the main menu though, and the thumnails of a few movies come up, I can click on one of those and they work fine. It only crashes when I actually select "My Videos"...

Any ideas? Anyone? Anyone?

Hang on! Scratch that! "My Pictures" just crashed again! Back to square one...
(But it was fine a minute ago!!)

Rabs.

Rabs - that's really bad mate and certainly not acceptable !

If you're sure you've eliminated the possibilty that it's being caused by an installed program then all that's left is a hardware problem - which seems really unlikely given that it's recent behaviour combined with your description of what's happening.

So you've used sysytm restore - have you tried MCE reloaded ? - it'll mean you're back to the beginning again but it's worth a try.

If that fails - all that's left is a fresh install - but if I were you I'd invest in Norton Ghost first - then at least if you screw things up you're only ever 5 minutes away from a perfect install.

Thanks Mike!

I removed all the updates via Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs"...
How do I do a System Restore?

(If that doesn't work, I'll try MCE Reloaded...

OK - close MCE.

Go to your Windows start menu and then your control panel.

Switch to category view (sidebar menu) and select Performance and Maintenance.

You should then see System Restore in the left menu - select "Restore my computer to a previous time" and select a date that pre-dates when your problems began.

It'll take a few minutes and will involve a reboot - but if your problem has been caused by something you've done, it should fix it.

If not - MCE reloaded and last of all - new install!

Good luck - let us know how you get on ;)

Rabs - it may be cold comfort but for what it's worth - most of us here would be into our second or third installs (and some even more), remembering that digital TV in MCE isn't supported here and nor is the EPG, so it often takes a little time to get things just right - but once you do - it's like Heaven On A Stick ;)
